The technology curriculum for students in grades 4 & 5 is focused on furthering students' knowledge on the fundamentals of computers. Some of the skills we focus on are:
proper terminology of the parts of a computer and computer network
emphasis and training in proper keyboarding technique and proper keyboarding posture (students in these grade levels should type at a minimum of 12 words per minute with a 75% accuracy rate)
using word processing and spreadsheet software (Word & Excel) utilizing some of more advanced features and tools including drawing tools, creating multi column documents, using formulas, and creating multimedia presentations.
ability to use other technology (such as digital cameras, scanners and video equipments) and apply those skills in other educational content areas.
use technology (including online resources) to improve problem-solving and decision-making skills.
evaluate web sources for relevant information, use keywords and appropriate search strategies to locate information, and understanding/respect the moral, ethical, and social responsibilities of using online resources,
Another major focus of the technology curriculum is in cyber safety and the instruction of students in the moral and ethical use of information, particularly information found online. The Archdiocese of Louisville recommends the use of the ISafe program in schools and is what SMA will be utilizing with students. Parental information regarding the program will be sent home periodically but you can always visit their website for lots of additional information and useful links. The website is http://www.isafe.org/.
As a resource to parents, I will post links to information and websites that you can use at home to reinforce these technology skills!
